Farmers’ Suicide

Farmer. One man Army or would you like to give some other name to this man. Let me introduce him. He is the one who grows cereals for us. He is the one who is behind the food that we eat every day, three times or even more. He is behind every tinniest particle that we eat; may it be in any form. He works for us day and night. His efforts are much more than words can ever explain. The whole world may survive without doctors, engineers, actors, ministers or religions but never without farmers. I’d love to call him God.farmers_story_650_030315034757

Chaudhary Charan Singh (Former Prime Minister of India) who, himself belonged to a farmer family says:

“The farmer is the owner of this country, but he has forgotten his strength.”

Unfortunately, he has reached to a very dismal state. There are millions of reasons for his miserable and pathetic condition today. Broadly, he has gone insolvent because of middlemen, poor policies and negligence of the Governments. Farmers’ suicide is increasing day by day. Be it Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Punjab or Haryana or any other state, farmers are left with no motivation to survive.

Again, I would like to quote Chaudhary Charan Singh says:

“The progress of the country is not possible till the economic condition of the farmers is cured.”

I urge you, the writer fraternity, the youth and everyone out there who is reading my words to rise and raise their voice. Take it as a personal letter to you. Raise their voice so higher that it can enter the deaf ears of the government. Raise it so higher that it can awake the government from its deep slumber.

The one who provides us food needs our help to let his voice be heard.

farmers--621x414

  1. I think this is a worldwide problem. In our modern world, we have become disconnected from our food, where it comes from and the blood, sweat and tears required to produce it. Farmers are the real heroes in this world. Thank you for your insight. Mel

  2. Your message is also true in Australia where extreme weather conditions of flood and extended drought combined with crippling debt are forcing farmers off the land that has been held in some families for generations. Many have resorted to suicide as they lose all hope. It’s a national tragedy.

  3. Yes, it’s really sad. In a way, I wish that I didn’t know, you know the saying ignorance is bliss. I feel sorry for the future. I hope I am wrong, but we seem to be on too reckless of a path.

  4. As someone who’s from a farming family I can identify with this. Farmers are so proud of their craft and are the backbone of our society. They deserve better than what they are getting now.

  5. Farmers are our heart and soul. But they don’t get their proper dues. Moreover, they are dependant on weather and use obsolete technology for tilling the fields. Though, lately technology is also being provided. The present situation will improve slowly.

  6. There are more reasons for the plight of the farmers. In India we depend on monsoon and we do not have a strong irrigation system. The environmental damage is so much that it has affected the monsoon and we are getting deficient rainfall almost every year. No political organisation is serious and the farmers have been merely reduced as a vote bank and politicians use them to get votes in the name of loan waiver and subsidy.
